New ‘Radical Surgery’ for Mesothelioma Victims Has Supporters and Opponents
What risks would a mesothelioma victim be willing to take to extend his or her life? That is a subject currently being debated by doctors, as the website Mesothelioma News reported on February 27, 2012, that a procedure called extrapleural pneumonectomy has its share of proponents as well as critics. According to Mesothelioma News, the procedure involves the removal of the lung, the diaphragm, the lining of the heart, and the lining of the chest wall. These operations are considered radical surgeries because they involve removal of body parts before the cancer spreads to the lymph nodes and surrounding tissue. Mesothelioma News reported that while the painful surgery is not a cure, proponents claim it has been known to extend the lives of mesothelioma patients by slowing the disease’s progression. Study Finds Mesothelioma Surgery to Be ‘Harmful Procedure’
A new report comparing the long-term post-operative quality of life (QoL) as well as disease control among mesothelioma patients who had one of two surgeries, extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) or pleurectomy/decortication (PD), has led to a team of Italian surgeons calling EPP a “harmful procedure.” On January 13, 2012, the international journal Lung Cancer published the study based upon 39 early stage mesothelioma patients who had had either EPP or PD and were asked to complete a QoL questionnaire at baseline, then again at six and 12 months post-treatment. The study found that 62 percent of EPP patients experienced major complications in the hospital, compared to 24 percent of PD patients. While the difference in long-term survival was too minimal to be statistically significant, there were two deaths after surgery among the EPP patients compared to none among those who had PD.
