California Zip Code Class Action Lawsuits

According to Reuters, the California Supreme Court ruled that retailers cannot ask consumers for ZIP codes in order to complete a transaction and that such action violates a California consumer privacy law and the state’s Song-Beverly Credit Card Act. Class action lawsuits have been filed against several California retailers, including Williams-Sonoma and Tiffany & CO alleging the retailers violated state laws by asking for customer zip codes. Jessica Pineda, a California resident, filed a lawsuit against Williams-Sonoma after the cashier asked her for her zip code. Pineda provided the information believing it was required in order to purchase items. Pineda was unaware that the store’s computer software matched her name and zip code with her previously undisclosed address in order to market products, lawsuit alleges.
