Boston Mayor Proposing ‘Sweeping Changes’ After Asbestos Found in Allston Building
More than 70,000 students were moving into apartments around Boston as the fall semester began, but surprise inspections uncovered some troubling discoveries in one building. WHDH-TV reported on September 1, 2012, that the city uncovered such health concerns as bed bugs, rodents and asbestos at a building in the Allston neighborhood. WHDH reported that Boston Public Health officials immediately sealed off the area. “We determined that there was asbestos around the boiler room as well as in the laundry room,” City Inspector Bryan Glascock told WHDH. “We just want to make sure the building is safe, clean and healthy for them. We also had a lot of dumping in the back…overloaded dumpsters, rat problems so we’re trying to give this a comprehensive approach.” WHEH reported that Boston Mayor Thomas Menino made his rounds at colleges and universities around the city to “make sure that the living conditions for students are…

Newcastle United Savior Succumbs to Mesothelioma
When Freddie Fletcher’s lung collapsed in April 2012 and he was rushed to the hospital to have the fluid removed, it was no surprise that the Newcastle United soccer team’s former chief executive was determined to beat his mesothelioma diagnosis. According to the English daily newspaper, the Evening Chronicle, Newcastle had faced years of financial difficulties and banks were considering putting the club into administration before Fletcher became involved in negotiations to launch a takeover of the team in 1991. He helped bring the soccer team back from the brink of liquidation and reestablished them among the top tier of English soccer in the 1990s, bringing star players to the club. Fletcher had similar success transforming the Glasgow Rangers from an underachieving squad into one of the most dominant teams in Scottish soccer before taking on the Newcastle assignment. “I’ve no idea how I got it. It can stay in…

‘I Can See OSHA Violations from Here’
There are a number of disturbing elements in this August 21, 2012, story from WGCL-TV about renovations being performed at the Pike County Courthouse in Zebulon, Georgia. As one unidentified gentleman says, “I can see OSHA violations from here.” That man was walking with an older individual who needed a cane, but was unable to use the handicapped entrance ramp because it was blocked by construction. In addition to that, it is also alarming to see Courthouse employee Sandy Caldwell wearing a mask while working in order to avoid breathing in any dust. “I have had some issues, some respiratory infections,” Caldwell tells WGCL in the video. “Am I concerned about my health? Absolutely, anybody that works in an environment where there’s a lot of dust would be.” Another Courthouse employee, April Jackson, told WGCL that there are dust particles flying around and parts of the building have been made…

Asbestos Discovered On Island Popular For Boating, Fishing and Camping
This video shows oil from the April 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon spill washing up along the shores of Horn Island off the coast of Mississippi. On August 20, 2012, the Associated Press reported that the Gulf Islands National Seashore (GINS) closed about 30 acres of Horn Island to the public indefinitely after BP cleanup workers discovered tiles containing asbestos. GINS superintendent Dan Brown told the AP that one of 12 areas tested at that site also came back positive for mustard gas. Brown told the AP that asbestos materials were identified around old concrete foundations on the north side of the island known as “The Chimney,” which the Department of War used to test biological toxins from late 1943 to 1944. “A Pentagon report in November 1993 said Horn Island was one of three sites in Mississippi where nerve agents, mustard gas and other chemical weapons might be buried,” the…
